Education, support and lobbying to protect the population from the harmful impacts of the oil pipeline in Cameroon
The project supports the population in its struggle against the negative impacts of the Chad-Cameroon oil pipeline. A local NGO is gathering information to ascertain whether the agreed level of compensation has been paid in the agreed form to the affected population, and is supporting the local people – with visible success - in negotiations with private-sector corporations and government agencies.

Nigeria
Programme to mediate in ethnic conflicts aggravated by the impacts of oil extraction in the Warri Zone of the Niger Delta
MISEREOR is helping to support a Nigerian Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) that is mediating in a conflict situation involving ethnic groups and oil companies in the Niger Delta. The objective is to settle the ethnic conflict peacefully, and to ensure appropriate development of the ethnic groups' living areas through equitable participation in the oil earnings.

In Chad a civil society network supported by MISEREOR is involved in the future oil regions, advising the people about the possible risks and implications of extraction. This network also supports the grassroots groups in these regions.

In the Republic of Congo MISEREOR supports the transparency campaign entitled “Publish What You Pay”, which requires oil companies to regularly publish the payments they make to the government. In addition the campaign advocates the transparent utilisation of oil revenues.

In Angola MISEREOR supports a project which backs up faith-based and secular initiatives to strengthen transparency and public control of state oil revenues.

In Germany MISEREOR plays an active role in the working group on the “Chad-Cameroon Oil Pipeline Project”. The working group, consisting of several German NGOs, lobbies in Germany and demands that those responsible for the project utilise the revenue for community development and poverty alleviation. MISEREOR is also one of the sponsoring organisations of the Ecumenical Network of Central Africa (ÖNZ). As such MISEREOR has co-commissioned a study which, using the example of five German companies operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo, explores the question of how private enterprise can and does help to convert an economy of violence into one of peace. One of the case studies comes from the mining sector, and another from the tropical timber sector.

Moreover MISEREOR is a member of the “Business and Human Rights” working group of the Human Rights Forum, and has a VENRO (Association of German Development NGOs) mandate to work within the “Round Table on Codes of Conduct” for the transparent and efficient implementation of voluntary codes of conduct by businesses from Germany and elsewhere.

Peru: Promotion of democratic participation of village communities threatened by mining
Through a Peruvian network of Non-Governmental Organisations and faith-based institutions (Red Muqui), MISEREOR supports consultation with the local population on planned mining projects. Village communities are to be kept fully informed of the possible impacts of mining on their lives, to enable them to draw their own conclusions – and to speak up and articulate their demands in public.
