English is the official language of Ghana’s approximately 20 million inhabitants. However, more than 40 other languages and dialects exist in the country. Ghana gained independence on 6 March 1957, and its form of government is that of a presidential democracy. The administrative structure is broken down into 10 regions with regional ministries, and 110 districts. The Catholic Church, which counts 10% of Ghana’s population among its members, enjoys high standing within the country. It cooperates in various sectors (e.g. health care) with the responsible governmental agencies.
The 18 Dioceses have established Diocesan Development Offices to coordinate development work, and to act as mediators of MISEREOR’s promotion, providing the necessary link between donors and the beneficiary population.
In Ghana, MISEREOR focuses its promotion on projects and programmes in the health, rural development and non-formal vocational training sectors. In the conurbations of Accra and Kumasi, MISEREOR provides funds to support street children.
MISEREOR promotes on average 23 projects a year with funds amounting to around EUR 1,000,000.
