Sudan

Sudan is moving closer and closer towards peace. With the exception of certain acutely crisis-prone regions, a ceasefire between the government forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) is now in place across large areas of the country.

The programmes promoted by MISEREOR have been harmonised with the new situation: whereas the previous focus of support was emergency aid measures, the approach today is geared almost exclusively to activities for sustainable development. At the same time, with the limited funds available MISEREOR is committed to supporting the Churches in the task they have set themselves of “reconciling the peoples” following the signing of the peace accord.

To this end, MISEREOR continues to cooperate predominantly with the established partner Dioceses in the North and South of the country, seeking at the same time to provide balanced support to both regions.

The main thematic focus is still basic needs satisfaction: basic education and vocational training (especially for girls), health and water supply. The cross-cutting themes to be incorporated into all programmes are peace education and conflict prevention, as well as HIV/AIDS.

MISEREOR is a member of the Sudan Ecumenical Forum and the Oil Divestment Campaign, as well as the CIDSE Working Group on Sudan.
