Safeguarding Policies
Information document

The protection of the dignity and rights of all people is a priority shared by Misereor and its partner organisations around the world. Therefore, safeguarding is a major element of our partnerships.
The term “safeguarding” comprises measures for the protection against sexualised violence, exploitation and power abuse of both vulnerable persons in the vicinity of projects and project staff and volunteers. For Misereor, safeguarding also means taking responsibility in our own organisation and implementing this attitude together with our partners in a binding way.
Misereor supports partner organisations in establishing and continuously developing appropriate safeguarding structures and mechanisms. In this, Misereor is governed by binding Church and other international guidelines which provide a framework for our cooperation with partner organisations.
On this website, we provide information and working materials that support partner organisations to:
• develop a safeguarding policy of their own;
• review and further develop existing guidelines; and to
• systematically reflect on risks and protection mechanisms.
Many organisations already have effective safeguarding mechanisms. However, approaching the topic of safeguarding in a structured way, helps to make these mechanisms visible, to develop them further in a targeted manner as well as to strengthen transparency and security both internally and externally.
Despite preventive measures, incidents of sexualised violence, exploitation or power abuse can occur in any organisation. For such incidents, Misereor has set up a whistleblowing system. Via this system, reports about incidents in the partner organisations or the projects funded as well as regarding Misereor and persons working for Misereor can be submitted. All incoming reports are treated confidentially, thoroughly investigated and dealt with according to clearly defined processes.

Misereor uses a whistleblowing system to provide a confidential and straightforward way to submit reports. The whistleblowing system serves as an input channel for reports of violations of Misereor’s code of conduct, internal regulations of the organisation or applicable laws.
