Statement on the attack on the al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City
Misereor is appalled by yesterday's bombing of the al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City. We call on all parties to the conflict to thoroughly investigate the incident. We are deeply shocked that apparently hundreds of innocent civilians have been killed in the attack. At the same time, we mourn each Israeli and Palestinian victim whose life was claimed as a result of the ongoing violence in the Middle East. Everyone, regardless of their nationality, religion or conviction, has the right to respect for their integrity.
Misereor has had close ties to the hospital for many years. A Christian institution, it most recently served as an important shelter for thousands of internally displaced people from the Gaza Strip. Thanks in part to high-performance solar units funded by Misereor, the hospital was able to continue treating sick and injured patients. The power produced by the units ensured that the hospital was able to operate around the clock despite the irregular electricity supply from the public grid.
Misereor expressly warns that civilians must never be misused as human shields and their deaths must not be used as war propaganda.
